Book excerpt: Two families are united—and torn apart—by the Civil War in these three dramatic novels by the #1 New York Times–bestselling master of the historical epic. In North and South, the first volume of John Jakes’s acclaimed and sweeping saga, a friendship is threatened by the divisions of the Civil War. In the years leading up to the Civil War, one enduring friendship embodies the tensions of a nation. Orry Main from South Carolina and George Hazard from Pennsylvania forge a lasting bond while training at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Together they fight in the Mexican-American War, but their closeness is tested as their regional politics diverge. As the first rounds are fired at Fort Sumter, Orry and George find themselves on different sides of the coming struggle. In John Jakes’s unmatched style, North and South launches a trilogy that captures the fierce passions of a country at the precipice of disaster. In Love and War, the Main and Hazard families clash on and off the Civil War’s battlefields as they grapple with the violent realities of a divided nation. With the Confederate and Union armies furiously fighting, the once-steadfast bond between the Main and Hazard families continues to be tested. From opposite sides of the conflict, they face heartache and triumph on the frontlines as they fight for the future of the nation and their loved ones. With his impeccable research and unfailing devotion to the historical record, John Jakes offers his most enthralling and enduring tale yet. In Heaven and Hell, the battle between the Mains and Hazards—and Confederate and Union armies—comes to a brilliant end. The last days of the Civil War bring no peace for the Main and Hazard families. As the Mains’ South smolders in the ruins of defeat, the Hazards’ North pushes blindly for relentless industrial progress. Both the nation and the families’ long-standing bond hover on the brink of destruction. In the series’ epic conclusion, Jakes expertly blends personal conflict with historical events, crafting a haunting page-turner about America’s constant change and unyielding hope. This “entertaining [and] authentic dramatization” (The New York Times) is a thrilling tale of shifting loyalties, set during one of the darkest moments in American history.

Book excerpt: Listening to Your iGod revives the discussion of religion and science and the parallels that exist between the two fields of thought. Author Tyler James presents his thoughts on why these two very different schools of thought may actually complement each other at times. Jesus taught in parables that offered parallels between nature and Gods word. Jesus himself was paralleled with nature as well, lending credence to the idea that there is more to spreading Gods word than the obvious. Consideration of the segregation and feud between science and religion points to similar segregation and differences among the worlds societies and religions today. James suggests that the world as a whole needs to gain greater maturity in order to get past these differences and live in harmony. Moreover, this connection is even more relevant given the impending apocalypse, which he believes will begin in 2016. By showing the parallels between science and religion in Listening to Your iGod, James hopes to lay the groundwork for connection and harmony.

Book excerpt: This book reveals what you always wanted to know about the issues of life, death and the afterlife. Supported by Scriptures, it reveals shocking truths about heaven, hell and your birthright blessing. There're four components to God’s birthright (covenant) blessing which are His (1) word blessing, (2) peach blessing, (3) wealth blessing, and (4) eternal life blessing. God set this inheritance aside for you before you were born. There's enough abundance in your birthright blessing to fulfill every need you have. It entitles you to dwell in a land of utopia whereby your peace, health, friendships, quality of life, holiness and well being are absolutely perfect. Speaking of the good life, it doesn't get any better than this. This book shows that (1) you have a personal calling on your life (you’re created for a purpose), and (2) your racial group has a calling to fulfill. You need to know your personal and racial callings, for they are eternal. Before you can appreciate what God has in store for you, you need to know who you are (the real you that God created you to be). This book reveals the real you. This book also confirms the reality and location of heaven and the materials saints’ new bodies will be made of. It shows what saints do in Paradise now and forevermore. You'll be delighted and pleasantly surprised to know your heavenly activities. This book reveals (1) where Hades is located (the temporary abode of sinners called the region of disembodied spirits), (2) where the permanent place of torment is located called the eternal lake of fire, and (3) the cursed materials sinners’ bodies will consist of. In hell, sinners' bodies will burn to ashes and be recycled to burn all over again. God's Scriptures confirm these truths.

This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 234 pages. Book excerpt: This book unfurls and examines the anti-slavery allegory at the subtextual core of Herman Melville’s famed novel, Moby-Dick. Brian Pellar points to symbols and allusions in the novel such as the albinism of the famed whale, the “Ship of State” motif, Calhoun’s “cords,” the equator, Jonah, Narcissus, St. Paul, and Thomas Hobbe’s Leviathan. The work contextualizes these devices within a historical discussion of the Compromise of 1850 and subsequently strengthened Fugitive Slave Laws. Drawing on a rich variety of sources such as unpublished papers, letters, reviews, and family memorabilia, the chapters discuss the significance of these laws within Melville’s own life. After clarifying the hidden allegory interconnecting black slaves and black whales, this book carefully sheds the layers of a hidden meaning that will be too convincing to ignore for future readings: Moby-Dick is ultimately a novel that is intimately connected with questions of race, slavery, and the state.

Book excerpt: William Terry Couch (1901–1988) began his four-decade publishing career building the University of North Carolina Press into one of the nation’s leading university presses. His editorial attacks on the social ills of the South earned him a reputation as a southern liberal. By the 1940s, his disaffection with New Deal politics turned him toward the right, resulting in his 1950 firing as director of the University of Chicago Press. As a conservative, Couch sought books and articles that would sway general readers from what he saw as an intellectual torpor that accepted the growing role of government in American life. The liberals who controlled the presses found him dogmatic and irascible. When he tried to turn Collier’s Encyclopedia into a journal of conservative opinion, he was fired as editor in chief in 1959. He ended his career as publisher for the libertarian William Volker Fund, which collapsed in the 1960s under charges of Nazism. Couch was committed to publishing as a social cause and strove to disturb American complacency. This is the first book-length biography of Couch—a publisher who brought academic scholarship to the reading public to effect social, political and economic change.

The European Union and the New Trade Politics

This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 178 pages. Book excerpt: The politics of international trade have changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Advances in technology have spurred a new kind of 'trade' involving transfers of components and materials across borders but within firms. Trade in services, foreign direct investment and sales by affiliates of foreign-owed companies have grown more rapidly than trade in goods, making national rules and regulations more significant barriers to trade. The effects of 'non-trade' policies on trade have engaged new actors in trade politics, not least in the European Union (EU). The emergence of a more active bloc of developing countries alongside a vibrant international civil society, including environmental and consumer groups and ministries, have made trade politics increasingly lively, complex, and challenging for the EU. Meanwhile, the World Trade Organization has become not only a primary focus for EU trade policy but also a lightning rod for protest, a powerful 'legaliser' of trade diplomacy, and an arena where it is often difficult, even impossible, to separate private from public interests. The European Union and the New Trade Politics provides a state of the art analysis of how the EU shapes and is shaped by the 'new' trade politics. This book was previously published as a special issue of The Journal of European Public Policy.
