Book excerpt: Off-grid isn’t a state of mind. It isn’t about someone being out of touch, about a place that is hard to get to, or about a weekend spent offline. Off-grid is the property of a building (generally a home but sometimes even a whole town) that is disconnected from the electricity and the natural gas grid. To live off-grid, therefore, means having to radically re-invent domestic life as we know it, and this is what this book is about: individuals and families who have chosen to live in that dramatically innovative, but also quite old, way of life. This ethnography explores the day-to-day lives of people in each of Canada’s provinces and territories living off the grid. Vannini and Taggart demonstrate how a variety of people, all with different environmental constraints, live away from contemporary civilization. The authors also raise important questions about our social future and whether off-grid living creates an environmentally and culturally sustainable lifestyle practice. These homes are experimental labs for our collective future, an intimate look into unusual contemporary domestic lives, and a call to the rest of us leading ordinary lives to examine what we take for granted. This book is ideal for courses on the environment and sustainability as well as introduction to sociology and introduction to cultural anthropology courses.

Book excerpt: The symposium "Reaction Kinetics and the Development of Catalytic Processes" is the continuation of the very successful International Symposium "Dynamics of Surfaces and Reaction Kinetics in Heterogeneous Catalysis", held in September 1997 in Antwerp, Belgium. These proceedings contain a unique series of top level plenary lectures mainly focused on • the dynamics of catalytic surfaces • the interaction of the reacting molecules with the solid catalyst • the elementary steps of reaction pathways and molecular kinetics. Surface science techniques, molecular modeling, transient kinetic studies, sophisticated and specific reactors are included to a growing extent in the kinetic modeling and the development of catalytic processes. How this is practiced today and how it will evolve in the coming years, and what benefit can be expected for a more fundamentally based approach is the aim of the symposium.

Book excerpt: Interest in structured catalysts is steadily increasing due to the already proven, as well as potential, advantages of these catalysts. Updating the comprehensive coverage of the first edition published in 1998 with the latest science and applications, Structured Catalysts and Reactors, Second Edition gives detailed information on all aspects of structured catalysts and reactors, including: materials, mass transfer, selectivity, activity, and stability; catalyst preparation, design, and characterization; process development; modeling and optimization; reactor design; and operation costs and considerations. The book first examines how monolithic catalysts are used to clean exhaust gas from gasoline engines, treat industrial off-gases, burn fuels in commercial settings, and synthesize chemicals in two- and three-phase processes. It discusses configurations, microstructure, physical properties, and manufacture of ceramic and metallic monoliths before directing its focus to arranged catalysts and structured packings in terms of mass transfer. The book then explores catalytically active membranes and filters, featuring metallic membranes, permeation mechanisms, preparation and modeling, commercial membranes, and the latest applications, such as zeolitic membranes. Finally, several chapters present techniques for incorporating catalytic species into the structured catalyst support and controlling catalyst nanoporosity. This book conveys the scientific as well as economic advantages of using these unconventional catalytic techniques. With over 1500 references, tables, drawings, and photographs, as well as in-depth discussions and a new approach to catalytic processes, Structured Catalysts and Reactors, Second Edition is an essential reference for anyone working with or studying catalysis.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 50 pages. Book excerpt: The development of a solid chemical air generator capable of producing a breathable, oxygen enriched atmosphere for possible space applications was investigated. In the initial phase, the direct decomposition of solid ammonium nitrate to produce the desired atmosphere was studied. This direct method of conversion was found to be impractical as the reaction products included nitrogen oxides regardless of the conditions of decomposition. During the next phase, various catalyst systems for decomposition of nitrous oxide were investigated since the reaction products contained about 40% of this gas and results indicated this gas could be controlled. The level of nitrous oxide in the reaction products could not be increased sufficiently to provide the desired oxygen level, and it was necessary to decompose the nitrogen dioxide present in the reaction gases. A compact unit was developed that was capable of decomposing solid ammonium nitrate at a controlled rate on demand and partially converting the gases to provide an atmosphere containing about 12% oxygen. Book excerpt: Living Off-Grid in Wales addresses broad debates about the possibility of planning for a sustainable future, by an examination of rural development off the grid. Contrasting Wales’s policy on One Planet Development – a planning policy that encourages living off-grid – with a more DIY approach to living off-grid, the book presents case studies from eco-villages that imagine off-grid very differently. The text pivots on the problematic question that if planning is about the spatial reproduction of society, then why should it encourage autonomy from societal systems. The ethnographic case studies in the book comprise an ethnography of rural Wales, and the focus on eco-villages brings a fresh perspective to the anthropological literature on community by considering off-grid as a radical form of social assemblage.

This book was released on 2000-03-24 with total page 520 pages. Book excerpt: Despite the advances in understanding the phenomena that occur on a catalyst surface, much of the successful catalyst development and use continues to be half science and half art. The art resides in the practical knowledge of experts in the development and use of commercial catalysts-it comes with experience. Now the background needed to nurture the experience and inspire the art is collected along with the science into a single volume. Whether called upon to select or improve a catalyst, design a process, diagnose operating problems, or improve existing processes, the Handbook of Commercial Catalysts provides the information needed to form a basis for the task. It offers a starting point by providing a broad overview of 150 major commercial processes and the heterogeneous catalyst used for each. The author has arranged them according to specific reaction or reaction type, and supplies reference citations for deeper research. He offers valuable insghts-based on chemistry, thermodynamics, and surface science-that provide a framework for rational reasoning about catalyst performance. With data collected from the existing literature, from the in-house specialists of commercial vendors, and from his own extensive experience, the author discusses for each reaction: Product uses Chemistry Mechanism Catalyst type Catalyst suppliers and licensors Catalyst deactivation Catalyst regeneration Process units Process kinetics Armed with this information, the reader can begin rational analysis of an existing or planned reaction system and logically discuss catalyst characteristics and operations with technical representative of catalyst manufacturers and with colleagues.
