Book excerpt: Combat Death in Contemporary American Culture: Popular Cultural Conceptions of War since World War II explores how war has been portrayed in the United States since World War II, with a particular focus on an emotionally charged but rarely scrutinized topic: combat death. Agnieszka Soltysik Monnet argues that most stories about war use three main building blocks: melodrama, adventure, and horror. Monnet examines how melodrama and adventure have helped make war seem acceptable to the American public by portraying combat death as a meaningful sacrifice and by making military killing look necessary and often even pleasurable. Horror no longer serves its traditional purpose of making the bloody realities of war repulsive, but has instead been repurposed in recent years to intensify the positivity of melodrama and adventure. Thus this book offers a fascinating diagnosis of how war stories perform ideological and emotional work and why they have such a powerful grip on the American imagination.

This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 362 pages. Book excerpt: My dream then was to play baseball for the New York Yankees. I was on the Stuyvesant baseball team, but because of my working hours, my playing time was limited. During my time at public school I was quite the rascal, along with my best friend Louie. In high school I continued my antics, only without Louie, who went to a different school. At the University of Alabama my cray antics were somewhat moderated after I met and married my wife, Sylvia. While waiting to be drafted into the service I got a job with my wife's relatives' footwear wholesale company traveling to the "Hill" country of Tennessee. After being drafted I was sent to Fort Jackson for basic training. My next assignment was Fort McClellan, Alabama. If was great duty since I was about sixty miles form where we lived in Birmingham. It was great that is until I was sent to Korea for 18 months. When I was discharged, my first dream to become a corporate president by the time I was 35 years of age and after 8 eventful years with Thom McAn shoes company that goal was fulfilled. After that I became and Executive Vice President of a shoe import-export company. At the peak of that career I formed my own company, which became quite successful. Throughout that period I traveled the world having fun, interesting and exciting times. I continued to experience the ups and downs of a life well lived in Bill Morgenstein's compelling new memoir, The Crazy Life of a Kid from Brooklyn. While first reminiscing upon his childhood in Brooklyn during the depression, Morgenstein traces his life through times of war, peace, and everything in between. At times funny and heartbreaking, The Crazy Life of a Kid in Brooklyn details Morgenstein's enlistment in the US Army, his days running a $55 million dollar company, his despair at losing it all to a scam, and much more. His chance encounters with such historical figures as Sergeant York, Cordell Hull, Sid Gordon, Telly Sevalas, Jomo Kenyatta, Ken Cole, Garry Marshall, Andy Williams, David Rockefeller and Vince Camuto, along with many others, provide amusing cultural touchstones that reveal a willingness to embrace everything life has to offer. Through all the successful, disappointing, dangerous, educational, and enlightening experiences that have shaped his life, Morgenstein remains philosophical as he explores the roles of ethics, honesty, and unfailing determination in shaping the human experience.

Book excerpt: This biography, hysterically at times is about Bill's life well lived life, from my prankster days growing up in Brooklyn with my best friend Louie, who always got me into trouble to the present where sadly I lost his oldest, beloved son to Cancer. Some of my high school exploits would not go over well in today's world. At the University of Alabama, where I was bounced from one fraternity, only to join the AEpi fraternity (at the insistence of his soon to become wife of 60+ years). After being graduated with a BS in Finance Bill spends an interesting year working for his wife's wholesale shoe company. I meet some fascinating people, such as the famous WWI hero Sgt. York, along with extremely interesting "hillbilly's" in the Hill country of Tennessee. Being drafted in the army comes next. Basic training in Ft. Jackson, the Chemical Corp, close to home, with it's gas masks and atropine surrettes, and then being levied out to Korea. Aboard ship I met Jimmy who has become my closest friend. Jimmy gets me my own room, office and painting studio with an assignment to paint a mural for the Captain of the ship. The book will show how a non painter survives the assignment. The war had ended in Korea, so there was little fighting. I was given a cushion assignment, working for the general's in 8th Army HQ, after hours, teaching English to Korean students, executives and military. Just before returning to the states and after my excellent contacts had already left a jealous Major manages to bust me in rank. Upon my return we move back North and I get an executive training job with Thom McAn shoe company, where I advance up the ladder and being trained by incredibly talented and ethical management. Among the interesting stories you will read how a promotion and a move from Chicago to New Jersey costs me a tidy sum in because of a lowered salary. After almost 9 years I move on to Kitty Kelly shoe company where I eventually become president. After 2 1/2 years I am fired because the son that had caused a prior bankruptcy is brought back by the chairman of the board. Ben, the owner although a genius in some respects was crude, bigoted and when drinking heavily (often) was mean as hell. When you read of his antics you will split your sides laughing. I was fired despite the fact that I had the best years either before or after I left. As the saying goes "blood is thicker than water". My next job was executive vice president with a footwear import company. I traveled extensively overseas, working long hours and being involved in styling, production and sales. At one point I decided to go out on my own. I discussed it with Eric, the owner and he suggested that I work part time for the company and part time for myself. When I discussed the offer with Sylvia (my wife), she said that she supports any decision that I would make but that I couldn't do both well. I opted to go out on my own and I formed Marquesa International Corporation. I started small in Italy in order to stay away from Eric's sources in other countries. Eventually I would expand to Spain, England, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Taiwan, Yugoslavia, and even exporting from the United States. The stories about the events in these countries are fascinating. Marquesa eventually reaches it's peak as a $55 million import-export company. At that point I am scammed by a large Columbus, Ohio company and end up with a huge International lawsuit which drains the company and ruins it. My retirement lasts two weeks, after which I take a sales job with a division of Montgomery-Ward, a company that I previously had as a customer. Eventually they are sold and I join a new company (after a 10 day retirement) that does alternative financing. After which I am approached to help form a similar type company as executive vice president, where I remain until the recession of 2009. I am currently doing sales and loan consulting for corporations. Read the book. You will laugh. learn and learn.

Book excerpt: The outrageously funny, heartbreaking, and surprising story of Tracy Morgan's rise from ghetto wiseass to superstar comedian. Who is Tracy Morgan? The wildly unpredictable funnyman who rocketed to fame on Saturday Night Live? The Emmy-nominated actor behind the sly and ingenious character Tracy Jordan on the award-winning hit sitcom 30 Rock, whose turbulent personal life often mirrors that of his fictional alter ego? Is he Chico Divine, the life of the party–any party, anytime, anywhere–getting ladies pregnant everywhere he goes? Or is he a soulful, tender family man who emerged from a hardscrabble ghetto upbringing and, against all odds, achieved superstardom, raised a solid family, prevailed over a collection of lethal bad habits, and is still ascending new heights and coming into his own? The answer is: Tracy Morgan is all that. And a bag of potato chips with a 50¢ soda. When he was just a boy living in the Tompkins Projects in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, being funny was about survival. With the right snap, Tracy could shut down the playground bullies who picked on him and his physically disabled older brother. And with a wild enough prank, he could exact revenge on whoever stole his Pumas at the community pool. Later, being funny was about escape–from the untouchable sadness of his father's death, from the desperation of the drug dealer's trade, from the life-and-death battles waged on the streets of the South Bronx in the age of crack. But these days being funny is about living his dream–a dream born in the comedy clubs of Harlem and realized on shows like Martin and Saturday Night Live, where he was a cast member for seven years, and in movies like The Longest Yard and Half-Baked. With brutal honesty and his trademark take-no-prisoners humor, Tracy tells the story of his rise to fame, with all its highs and its many lows–from the very public battles with alcohol and diabetes that threatened both his career and his life to the private and poignant end of his twenty-year marriage. In his singularly warped and brilliant way he muses on family, love, sex, race, politics, ambition, and what it takes to bring the funny. Hilarious, inspiring, searing, and touching, I Am the New Black is a fascinating peek inside the minds of one of the most compelling and defining comedians of our time.

Something that lives inside me to this day, exploding out like that chestburster in Alien when I least suspect it. But I have help. My amazing friend Coop—the demon who saved me from an ugly end—remains by my side, loyal and true. She was Hell’s best tattoo artist back in the day, and together with my designs, we’re opening Inkerbelle’s Tattoos and Piercings, right in the heart of Portland’s most darling district, Cobbler Cove. Of course, our bid to fit in would be a little less rocky if I could help Coop assimilate with humans, keep a lid on our sassy talking owl, Livingston…oh, and if someone hadn’t killed our landlord on day one—in our shop. This mystery-loving, bumbling ex-nun and her trusty demon sidekick are on the case! If I don’t bumble my way right into my own demise first…

Book excerpt: In this candid and spirited memoir, oronde ash offers memories from age 9-17, his search for meaning in America despite bitterness, self-hate and disconnection many young boys suffer through in silent fury, and so few have expressed with open emotion, introspection and hope. Part coming-of-age tome, part immigrant assimilation story, part quest for meaning beyond the American dream, each chapter begs us, no matter our color, age or creed, to question our intentions, value our relationships, stock up on human goodness, be moved by love's willing embrace and continually move to not merely change our lives, but to transform our world. Reviewer Diepiriye Kuku of www.litgriot.com writes, "Conceivably, it is these experiences of new Americans that teach us old ones the most about where we stand despite, and in spite of the grand values espoused in our rhetoric."
